/ Chemistry Department

Courses

Take a wide range of courses taught by internationally recognized faculty.

We offer a curriculum that heavily emphasizes research and hands-on experience. As a student in our department, you鈥檒l enjoy our small class size and the opportunity to use our well-equipped, state-of-the-art facilities on a regular basis. You鈥檒l take sequences of both lecture and laboratory courses to graduate with an advanced practical understanding of chemistry.

As a first-year chemistry student, you鈥檒l need to take one of three options to start your program:

  1. Loading...
  2. Loading... and Loading... (two-semester sequence)
  3. Loading... (one semester)

Incoming first-year students with a 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry Exam may take 尝辞补诲颈苍驳鈥 and 尝辞补诲颈苍驳鈥.

We recommend the following course sequences depending on your major:

Pre-Health Professions

Engineering Majors

Science and Math Majors

  • Take chemistry early! In addition to being required for many majors, our 100-level courses can help you for balance study loads and provide strategies for success.
  • If you want to get a quick start, have an AP score of 4 or 5, are confident in your abilities in chemistry and are motivated to try a new subdiscipline, consider taking Organic Chemistry.

If you have any questions about which sequence is right for you, contact the chair of the chemistry department, Dr. Elizabeth Sanford.

What Students Are Saying

鈥淢y mentors within the chemistry department supported my dual interest in medicine and basic science while encouraging me to spend time outside of the laboratory developing skills in leadership around campus.鈥
鈥擠r. David Paul, 鈥10,  MD/MS from University of Rochester 2016, Neurosurgery resident at University of Rochester

鈥淚 am very grateful to not just have been prepared broadly as a chemist through the degree program, but also to have worked on research well-suited to my interests.鈥
